A century ago, my grandfather was trained in the use of Morse code, one of the earliest forms of binary communication, often coded to prevent interception by the enemy.
One of the fascinating tools he used to learn Morse was to stack metal discs, each bearing a message in relief. Thanks to a clever mechanism of springs and gears, a small arm read the code on the discs and transmitted it to a receiver (called a sounder). I inherited these devices almost 40 years ago, when he passed away. He could never have imagined the digital landscape we live in today.
Although we are surrounded by data-driven marketing, we can reflect on how far communication has come. Yet the challenges of protecting important information and how we share it remain as great as ever.
