After four months, my #jobhunting is unsuccessful.
Despite what some believed, an extensive network, vast expertise and experience in #digitalmarketing & #digitalanalytics, I haven't found a leadership role in #martech, #privacytech or a #SaaS.
Several factors are at play:
• I've been self-employed for so long that people in #HR now see it as a risk. I see it as a demonstration of rigor, discipline, commitment, salesmanship, autonomy, creativity and more;
• There is no doubt about my #leadership, but I have never managed a large team... although I do handle hundreds of students per semester and supervise student internships and theses... The book "Becoming a technical leader" by Ken Orr was significant in my career - it highlighted how one could have a successful career as a leader without following the classic management path;
• Teaching marketing & analytics to MBAs could be seen as a distraction and a lack of availability for a new role. I see it as a corporate value that should be celebrated, a brand awareness opportunity, and a great #hrmarketing opportunity to find top talent! I believe that "sharing knowledge strengthens your own".
• Many of the organizations I've looked at are startups or "young" and onboarding a 55 year old into a team of young wolves might seem like a bad "fit" at first glance.... it's a reality that few will dare admit!
• I'm looking for a remote or hybrid role in Calgary. The #remotework is great - I've been doing it pre-Covid - but when applying, the competitive landscape is much larger, so you have to fall through the net of automated keyword filters or have really good internal contacts.
• As flagship brands like Hootsuite, Shopify, Saleforce and many others lay off employees, and with the recession looming, hiring is being put on hold for many organizations.
• I have openly expressed my vision of #NoConsentNoTracking, which might seem counterproductive to some organizations that are stuck in a vision of #marketing that goes against the most recent legal and technological developments. I see it as an opportunity to think about the future of marketing.
This leaves a bitter taste. In these times of resource shortages, it seems that many HR processes have been left in the past. Too often, there is no acknowledgement of application, no indication of process and timelines, not even a simple email when the application is unsuccessful.
So I made the decision to continue on the consulting side by responding to the requests of a few clients who contacted me and who see the value I can offer them. As in the past, I offer my services when there are complex projects, when there is a goal to move up the digital analytics maturity ladder and a desire to empower internal teams through coaching; while promoting the ethical use of data for marketing purposes.
If you think I'd be a good fit for your organization, I remain open to discuss opportunities.
