Back from the #iapp #cps22 #privacy conference held in Toronto last week. It was a first for me, and it was interesting to attend a conference where the vast majority of attendees had a legal background or were lawyers, as opposed to a pure marketing audience. I even got the impression that there were few people with a #marketing background. Also, for once, notions of privacy and data protection did not revolve solely around #GDPR. Still, many of the discussions reminded me of marketing conferences from a few years ago, where the talk was about avoiding IT because it's a pain to work with them... and how legal departments would be spending big on technology in the coming months... The #Privacytech is definitely gaining momentum, but I was a little disappointed to see so few topics specifically related to marketing practices. It was pretty clear that personal information collection is affected by #Bill64 or GDPR, but I didn't attend any sessions where edge cases were discussed (like #bigtech profiling). One thing is clear: Bill 64 in Quebec is quickly becoming the reference (as is the GDPR) for other Canadian provinces. It was also an opportunity for me to meet the great folks from Opsware Data and Masthead Data, two privacytech startups I'm helping.
