Ever since my journey in #WebAnalytics began in 1991 - using Perl scripts to parse HTTP log files and feeding them into an Oracle database - one refrain has persisted: "web analytics is hard."
With each incoming tide of analysts, each wave of innovation in our industry, the chorus echoes: "digital analytics is a HARD!" (you can usually feel the pain... "poor little me, nobody understands me!")
Let's put this into perspective:
Performing brain surgery ➜ HARD
Sending a spacecraft toward Saturn's moons ➜ HARD
Resolving global hunger ➜ HARD
Putting an end to the Russian war on Ukrainian ➜ HARD!
(although resolution seems rather simple if Russia would simply leave Ukraine!)
Ask anyone on the street about the difficulty of their job. If they reply with, "Oh, it's a breeze, feels like being on permanent vacation," it's a clear sign that they should be fired!
Analysts complaining about the complexity of their roles is a no-go.
Why?
Because our mission is to decipher intricate business processes, leverage all kinds of data, deliver informed recommendations, and instigate change. Moaning about the 'difficulty' of our tasks not only diminishes our credibility but also undermines the work of those whose roles are indeed more complex and challenging.
Remember, in the realm of analytics, we shouldn't perceive difficulty as a deterrent, but as an opportunity for growth and breakthroughs! As I like to say, "it it was easy, someone else would have done it!"
That being said, I found the post from Magda Baciu pretty funny and it inspired me to bring back some memories from a talk I did in 2016 at #Superweek called "Radical Analytics".
