Ghostery, Inc. claim to protect your #dataprivacy by revealing and blocking those pesty #trackers. Don't be fooled by their friendly looking little ghost icon. Their sketchy #ethics are revealed in their #privacy policy. Under terms such as "rewards" and "human web", they track your URLs and searches, which are then used for #targetedadvertising.
- Marketing is on by default: "Offers, also known as Ghostery Rewards, is turned on by default and allows companies to show relevant marketing offers..."
- Tracking of your browsing and search habits is on by default: "In order for Human Web to function we automatically collect non-private URLs, search queries along with search engine results pages..."
There was a big scandal because Avast was doing exactly that. How is this different? How can "on by default" be legal from a #GDPR perspective? (I doubt it is). And how can a company - Cliqz GmbH who owns Ghostery can claim "Protecting your privacy is part of our DNA" and think this is OK?
