I'm very pleased that #bill64 has been passed in #Quebec. It brings us closer to #GDPR and brings long overdue #dataprivacy requirements.
This Privacy Request article gives a good summary of the steps ahead now that this law has been enacted.
The whole process has moved fairly quickly. I suppose the Desjardins data breach in November 2019 - the largest financial institution here (4.3M people) - was a big push.
In my own way, I contributed to the discussion when I exposed the highly questionable practices of Equifax Canada in December of that year. Immediately following a radio interview with me, Sonia Lebel, the Minister of Justice, who is also responsible for access to information (among other things), responded and stressed the need for a legislative review.
Some of my work has been mentioned in government hearings.
Just last week, I exposed the questionable practices of Quebecor, the largest local media conglomerate, which has just launched an application where the collection and use of personal data is highly questionable, lacking transparency and user control.
This needs to change. #NoConsentNoTracking
