In the face of #Canada's #BillC18, both #Google and #Meta are asserting their inability to implement mechanisms for compliance. This legislation, urging #BigTech firms that share and preview online news content to share a portion of their advertising revenues, aims to bolster the strength and resilience of #journalism.
Yet, these tech giants, instead of embracing the legislation, have decided to exclude this content from their platforms, presenting an alarming #censorship approach for the growth of quality journalism and the right of Canadians to access content willingly shared by other users.
Remember when they made similar threats in #Australia? They quickly changed their course. And in France, Facebook, in 2021, reached an agreement with a news publishers lobby group. Now, #California is also considering a similar #law.
So, let's question this:
• These companies boast sophisticated AI-driven bots that can detect inappropriate content from myriad sources. They say they will efficiently and effectively ban news publishers content - which obviously entails the ability to detect it in the first place...
• They're proud of their capabilities to measure impressions, clicks, and conversions. But, they argue that quantifying how often this content is displayed, shared, or clicked is an insurmountable challenge?
That seems highly dubious and is simply utter bullshit. Oh! And they can do it in Australia and in France, but not in Canada?
It's time for Big Tech to step up and support the press and media they profit from, not evade their responsibilities under the guise of technical difficulties.
Shame on Meta and Google!
