It's that time of year. It even keeps me up at night. At 54, I've achieved financial freedom. I could retire right now. That doesn't mean I'm going to sit on my ass all day doing nothing.... ▷ Do I like consulting? Not as much as I used to. ▷ I considered a nice full-time position, but I decided to pass... ▷ Do I like teaching? Yes, it's so rewarding (but financially, not so much...). ▷ Do I like being a speaker? Enormously, but as long as there are no face-to-face events, I'm tired of podcasts and guest posts. I've often said that the only true social media conversion is when you get to meet people in person. I get a lot of invitations, but getting a speaker fee, let alone covering expenses or getting a keynote spot is not as obvious as some people think.... ▷ Do I recognize myself in this industry that I have contributed to for the best part of my career? My opinions are sometimes controversial - some would say "radical"... More than once, I have been found to be ahead of the curve. However, the recent saga with the association that is supposedly representing our industry really shook me up. Am I still having fun? Maybe not so much. ▷ And lastly, besides dealing with the pandemic like everybody else, my wife's cancer (she is out of danger for now) definitely impacted my priorities. What lies ahead for me: ▷ I'm teaching digital analytics to MBA and marketing majors this fall. ▷ The 1st cohort of my new digital marketing course will start in November and we may branch off into an executive version this winter. ▷ No more consulting for me - or it would have to be a very exceptional project! ▷ I'm looking for pre-seed investments or advisory opportunities for 3-5 startups in the data privacy space (some announcements coming soon!). ▷ I am open to keynote opportunities - time to plan for 2022! I might go to Stockholm in October, but given the state of the pandemic, I doubt that will happen. I had also agreed to a number of podcasts and virtual conferences, so I will honor my commitment, but I will not be doing any more virtual events. ▷ Enjoy life and take care of the people around me! I will be off for six weeks. Is it a "pandemic crisis" like the infamous 50-years old one? Maybe! How has the crisis impacted your career?

DID YOU KNOW? LinkedIn is spying on your browser extensions! While working on my own browser extension, I discovered that LinkedIn is actively scanning for other installed extensions. There’s code embedded in their site that loops through over 1,800 extension IDs, attempting to retrieve specific files from each extension’s package. If successful, LinkedIn knows exactly which extensions you’re using - especially those that might scrape content, automate actions, or modify their interface. This isn’t new. LinkedIn was first caught doing this over eight years ago, when they were scanning for just 38 extensions. That number has now ballooned to 1,800+! While some of these are clearly automation bots used for spam (no sympathy there), others are legitimate productivity tools. Why does this matter? This technique can be used by ANY website to detect extensions you’ve installed. It’s a powerful method for fingerprinting users - tracking them even when cookies and other identifiers are blocked. Privacy concerns. Since LinkedIn is probing elements installed on your device, doesn’t this fall under the ePrivacy Directive? There’s no mention of this practice in their privacy policy - nor any transparency about how they use this data. Is this a privacy violation? Petite tranche de vie de prof - j'ai besoin de ventiler un peu... Est-ce que c'est moi qui vieillis... ou est-ce normal qu'à la maîtrise, je reçoive encore des questions du genre : "Combien de pages?" "Interligne simple ou double?" "Quelle police et la taille de caractères?" Comme disait l'autre, on est pas dans un cours "Rédaction 101" ou "Mise en page pour les nuls"... Je me fiche pas mal de la forme. Ce qui m'intéresse, c'est la qualité de la réflexion, la pertinence de l'analyse, et la capacité à structurer une idée complexe. Pas si le texte fait 4 ou 5 pages en Times New Roman 12 pts avec des marges de 2.54 cm. Mais bon... peut-être qu'on devrait ajouter un micro-module : "S'assumer comme étudiant et prendre des décisions de base par soi-même".
