I've been using ChatGPT a lot to improve my writing, but I hadn't had a chance to get into code generation until now.
My computer science roots are awakened! Coding is like riding a bike. Over the years, I've coded in COBOL, Fortran, Pascal, LISP, C, JavaScript, VBScript, Perl, PHP, SQL and more... and now, Python.
(yes, I'm *THAT* old! 🤪 I even worked on Computer Aided Software Engineering - CASE Tools - which were developed using COBOL+Oracle on Unix to generate Fortran+DB2 on IBM mainframes in order to speed development and save costs!)
I'm like a child playing with a new toy! 😀
And therein lies the difference between those who are "script kiddies" copying code scavenged from the web and those who understand the concepts of software development.
I simply can't imagine how different my career would have been if I'd had access to ChatGPT when I was analyzing healthcare data early in my career, when I was creating low-level real-time routines for the Montreal Stock Exchange, or when I was working on Big Data projects before the term was invented, administering Unix systems and Oracle databases and so much more. Not to mention all the web development I've done.
And now, there is no way back. Be it software development, marketing or so many other roles, the job will never be the same.
I just wanted to share this little slice of my life on a Friday!
