As I (and many others) have speculated, the demise of third-party cookies provides an opportunity for some very smart people to look for new ways to identify users across websites.
Mozilla has shown that the first 150 websites are enough to identify someone, another research confirmed that 15 anonymous attributes are enough to create a unique digital DNA signature.
Sure, we knew about browser fingerprinting.
Using canvas+fonts isn't new, but they way the GPU fingerprinting is done in this newer paper is new to me. The evil geek in me thinks "brilliant!" to which the #dataprivacy advocate responds "no shit!".
The WebGL API is supported by all modern devices, very well standardized, doesn't require any kind of permission, doesn't need to be visible, and the solution is fast and super efficient: "98% classification accuracy in just 150 milliseconds, much faster than the 8 seconds used to collect fingerprints."
