So, because "data is the new oil", we talk about "data leaks".
Yes, indeed, data is the new oil:
- there are unscrupulous digging of our data ;
- waste disposal is a problem (data deletion, privacy requests);
- traceability (data lineage is often neglected);
- by-products are common (reuse of data without proper consent) ;
- and finally, like oil, the data ecosystem is largely controlled by an oligarchy. . .
I first shared these points in a presentation called "Hamel's Hell" at the Superweek Analytics Summit in 2018. Honestly, to an audience of #digitalanalytics professionals, I think I came across as a troublemaker who was throwing sand in the gears... (oil analogy totally intended here!).
I presented the same idea the next year, this time at the Marketing Summit in Prague under the title "The doomsday upon us". It was at that same conference that I did a Q&A with Christopher Wylie about Cambridge Analytica, which confirmed my decision to focus my career on the ethical use of data for marketing purposes.
