The concept of #NoConsentNoTracking extend beyond the web and should include #smarthome devices. #Amazon purchase of #Roomba is such an example. The article mentions a bunch of assumptions which would be useful to Amazon, like the size of home (income?), how empty a house might be (furniture selling opportunity?), if there are many items on the floor (kids? pets?). Will data sharing be turned on by default? From what I gleaned, you have to opt-out of Roomba storing the home map on the cloud. The article doesn't mention the fact some (most?) Roomba models are equipped with a camera, which could allow it to identify the type of furniture, colours, brands... Of course, they gave it a name that sounds intelligent and harmless: Vision Simultaneous Localization and Mapping... or VSLAM, or what is now called Precision Vision Navigation. I couldn't find any details about the camera itself and its capabilities on the Roomba website, but their privacy policy already describes all the information they are/might be collecting, including inference about consumer behavior, demographics and lifestyle, map and type of objects, as well as "the location and confidence factor of Wi-Fi devices connected to your local network, and Wi-Fi heat maps" and "Images from certain connected robots with camera-based navigation" and even "stream video to partner apps" (both opt-in) Of course, I already hear people saying "I have nothing to hide, and ads will be better targeted to my preferences"... beyond that, we might as well give our home keys (well... it's already done with Amazon Ring and smart locks!) #digitalmarketing #dataprivacy #datasecurity
