#ThoughtOfTheDay following a somewhat heated exchange on #dataprivacy...
When it comes to data privacy, you can either take a legal approach: "How can I mitigate the risks to the business?" Or you can take a #dataethics approach and constantly ask yourself, "What do my users/customers really want?"
To be clear, when I advocate for #NoConsentNoTracking, I am not making a legal claim/statement. Someone, again, disagreed with me in stating that "consent is only one of the six legal bases provided by the #GDPR." I know that! I think this person is completely missing the point and is too stubbornly rooted in a legal view of #dataprotection.
For the vast majority of #digitalmarketing and #digitalanalytics professionals who are "data protection illiterates," I hope this simple, catchy hashtag will help them think before they wildly collect data - no matter what law they fall under.
Because it's the right thing to do.
For those less versed in legalese, #NoConsentNoTracking is a simple way to take a step back and think about what is being collected, its purpose, and all the other aspects related to data (who, what, when, where, why, how); to think about doing a DPIA (Data Privacy/Protection Impact Assessment) even if the jurisdiction they are in doesn't require them to do so; to think about being transparent about what they are doing; to think about giving users control, etc.
It doesn't mean I'm against collecting data! It means we have, collectively, to re-build the trust that has been eroded. It's clear in my mind that data #privacy will be a new important brand asset in 2022 and beyond.
What do you think?
