"Where is the line between corporate responsibility to protect #privacy and personal responsibility? If someone goes posting #personaldata all over the internet, is it #martech's job to protect their privacy?"
Whether true or an urban legend, I like the following story:
In the early days of the auto industry, cars didn’t have seat belts, and when they did, they were rarely used.
Car manufacturers rejected the idea of adding extra safety features because it was expensive and, after all, people who kissed streetlights were just too stupid to stay on the road! Drivers also rejected them for fear of getting stuck if they were unlucky enough to run into a river.
People were too uneducated, did not understand science, and were irresponsible. Laws had to be enacted to protect citizens from their own negligence. Of course, people objected. It took a whole generation (20–30 years) and today we wouldn’t go back. It has become normal.
The same thing happened/is happening with cigarettes and junk food.
Now, let's talk about #dataprotection:
— laws are there to prevent greedy “data manufacturers” (data brokers and others) from abusing their power;
— laws are there to protect citizens from their own negligence;
— the #GDPR was enacted in 2016... that’s not very long ago... and many countries are lagging behind. We may need another 15 to 25 years before it becomes something perfectly normal! Better be patient!
